The village is situated high on Wensleydale's northern wall and commands extensive views over the open eastern end of the dale.
On a small green opposite the cottage is a children's play area. As the road only leads to a few houses at the end of the village, access is relatively safe.
Families with children may also want to visit the Lightwater Valley theme park and bird of prey centre which is less than an hour's drive away.
The cottage provides a good base for exploring the excellent surrounding countryside. It's ideal for walking with Swaledale and Coverdale nearby and there are on and off road cycle routes. It is close to the Coast to Coast footpath and the Pennine Way. There are plenty of local castles and abbeys and the unique "Forbidden Corner", an artistic maze followed via rhyming clues which provides entertainment for all ages. There is easy access to the northern cities, such as Durham, Leeds, Newcastle, York and Harrogate. In addition, the Metro Centre is approximately an hour's drive away. Closer to home are dozens of dales villages, including Hawes and its Wensleydale cheese factory and endless craft and art shops, tearooms and pubs. A relatively recent attraction is the steam train which runs from Leeming Bar to Redmire and can be heard from the cottage.
The cottage itself provides a warm and comfortable base from which to explore these attractions. It has thick stone walls and there are beamed ceilings in the living and dining rooms. There is a wide staircase with a window onto the walled garden. The rooms are large, particularly the two main bedrooms and both the bathroom and kitchen have been refurbished.
There is a wide range of pubs and restaurants within striking distance including The Blue Lion at East Witton and The Wensleydale Heifer at West Witton.
While most guests would want to have a car, there is a bus that comes into the village making it possible to access via public transport. | | | |
