Lamplugh is the perfect starting place to explore the fells, rivers, lakes and tarns of this beautiful part of the Lake District. There are a variety of walks right from the front door, or Loweswater Lake is just four miles away, with Buttermere and Crummock just a mile or two beyond. The village pub (the Lamplugh Tip) is a mile and a half away. For shops, Cockermouth (just 7 miles away) has a Sainsbury's as well as a wide variety of smaller independent shops, pubs and cafes. Listen to the silence, broken only by birdsong and the sound of sheep grazing. Wander beside the Duddon, or climb a peak and then reward yourselves with a meal at the Newfield Inn, just under a mile from the cottage, (the hikers’ portions are legendary).
Children love the Herdwick lambs and the multi-coloured baby rabbits. There are several streams, waterfalls and the river nearby where they can paddle or swim. And you can make an expedition to Arthur Ransome’s Kanchenjunga, (Coniston Old Man).
